Tragic losses are something we all have to bear at some point in our lives, yet here at 4charter we believe that the best way to pay respect to anyone who has passed on is to celebrate their life. With this in mind, we make it our priority to assist our customers wherever necessary during this tough time, and part of this service involves putting together an affordable package which takes the hassle out of the planning process.
Why choose Alice?
Alice is a beautifully refurbished Thames Sailing Barge with a reputation for luxury and elegance which precedes her. Scattering ashes at sea is particularly popular in cities with a naval legacy such as Portsmouth, and many find the beauty and tranquillity of the Solent appealing when seeking the perfect spot for a celebration of life.
Our standard package for a funeral at sea
We begin at 10am at Gun Wharf Quays in Portsmouth, where Alice is moored. Alice’s experienced crewmen then guide the craft out of Portsmouth Harbour to the spot where the Mary Rose foundered, marked today by a buoy – this is regarded as a very apt location for burials at sea, especially amongst those with a particular love of naval history. As the ashes are scattered, Alice’s on board sound system can play suitable accompanying music which you can choose from, or alternatively use an iPhone or mp3 player to line up a song which had a particular significance for the deceased.
This trip takes around an hour and a half, but we are more than happy to extend this time in order to sail the Solent, taking in views of Southampton, Cowes and Yarmouth from Alice’s deck. Alternatively, should you wish to scatter the ashes at another point on the Solent, we can plot a bespoke route based on your wishes.
Refreshments and Funeral Arrangements
Whilst refreshments are available on board at the point where the ashes are scattered, many of our customers prefer to host a wake on board Alice upon returning to Gun Wharf Quays. 4charter can offer a funeral at sea service at the dockside, with a sit down meal prepared by our in house chef for up to 16 people available. Alternatively, a buffet can be laid on for up to 50 guests if you wish to allow a large number to pay their respects. Alice’s large main saloon contains a well-stocked galley ideal for the raising of toasts, whilst the deck tent can be erected to create further space.
Should you wish to spend the night on Alice following the funeral at sea, accommodation can be provided on board for up to 14 people, with a mixture of berths and sofa beds in the main saloon to choose from. Furthermore, 4charter is happy to provide a bed and breakfast service upon request, allowing you to commemorate your loved one peacefully with everything taken care of for you.
